Applications

Developed with OpenIllusionist

The following are examples of applications and demos produced using the OpenIllusionist framework…

  • RobotShips – A permanent exhibit installation in the new Connect Gallery of the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, UK. It features toxic oil spills, scout ships and clean-up ships. The users can either help or hinder the clean-up process.
  • Fishtank – A compiled demo available from this website (source code is also available via Subversion). This will be a showcase for new agents in the near future.

Miscellaneous

There are a few example applications of other Augmented Environments already available. Here’s a small selection…

  • d-Touch – Developed by Enrico Costanza, this is just a marker detection library, which identifies and locates specific patterns based on a live webcam video stream. However, two applications have already been implemented in the past couple of years. m-Touch is a musical instrument, which uses a musical stave placed on a desk. A webcam observes this, and wooden blocks with notes on them are placed on the stave. The appropriate notes are then played by the PC. Audio d-Touch is a similar application, but instead of notes on a stave, the blocks are used to contain and manipulate audio samples.
  • Alterface – A Belgian software development company associated with Barco have developed several augmented museum displays such as “Technopolis” in Mechelen.
  • Virtual Showcase – They project augmentations onto objects within display cases to give an increased sense of the object in use, in motion or alive. Not exactly an augmented environment (as the objects are within a glass case), this is an interesting example of unencumbered augmentation in a publicly accessible environment.

Of course, these are just a few of the projects out there. If you think we’ve missed something exciting (especially if you’ve developed something with the Illusionist framework), just let us know.
